I started playing Minecraft last week for the first time ever. I’m 43 years old. It’s fun. it’s a lot of damn fun. I can just do whatever, build whatever, farm, and I don’t have to interact with anyone if I don’t want to. I’m having a blast with it.
For years I just dismissed it as a little kids game and at this point I’m kicking myself for not trying it sooner.

It actually got me the job I have today, by learning to host a server and going down the road if learning how to use Linux etc when the company I work for acquired another company and we took over their production I was the only tech that new how to setup a small network and remote in to all the machines and test

Whatever you do don’t go looking for a similar game called Vintage Story /s
VS is like Minecraft but way more realistic. There’s actual metal forging, panning, true mining, farming crops takes a lot longer, weather is a lot harsher. It’s just a more survival-heavy experience.
- Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
I really want to like VS but the progression is painfully slow. I love the story, I’ve put literal hours into chisel art to the point that I got to mod just to make my own doors, and I love the concept of the progression, I just desperately need 4-6 other people so none of us have to do all of the damn work. I quit playing a while back when I’d spent 3 days logging on with the goal of exploring and ended up wasting all my game time doing chores before I could get out and about.

5 daysLuanti is a good one too, although it might be closer to a minecraft clone than what you’re describing. It’s open-source though, and supports a fairly large modding community. There are all sorts of user-created extras that you can download and enable/disable as you please, right in the launcher.
They even have user-created game modes, so you can play the more traditional minecraft-style sandbox/survival game, or do various puzzles/mazes/platformers that people designed.
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Vintage Story is a lot like that too. The only thing is there’s no mod browser in the game, you have to open a separate window for it.
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
I think it spawned from that. Or one of those types of mods.
Basically they realized that what they wanted to do would basically make it a whole new game anyway, so they just went and made their own.
- Eheran@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
True mining? So you spend weeks looking for rich vains, then chissel them out over months, then process the ore etc. etc.
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Maybe not quite “true” mining, but there’s definitely a prospecting aspect of finding a good vein. There is a mod for coring/quarrying too. There’s pretty much a mod to make any aspect of the game more/less hardcore.

6 daysNever too late to get into Minecraft :-) I personally would recommend looking into Java Edition after you got your bearings and know what you are doing. There are awesome mod packs available - I started playing Minecraft decades ago, and about once a year i get the cravings for trying out a current modpack to see what people have been up to.
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
I just have to be “that guy” but Minecraft didn’t release a playable build until 2009, so that’s only 17 years. Not “decades.”
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexusEnglish
6 days“only” 17… I remember buying it after playing the alpha in my browser, seemed longer than 17 years
- BlueOysterCultist@lemmy.zipEnglish6 days
Do you miss the simplicity of it back then?
I think I started playing it either in 2011 or 12
I recently replayed and beat it as I’d never killed the ender dragon before. I feel it’s too clunky with all the additions for my tastes, like pre-enchantment tables is my preference
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexusEnglish
5 daysOh no, i am an absolute modpack fan - the more stuff and mechanics i can explore, the better.
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
I know it’s semantics and doesn’t really matter, but it just bugs the hell out of me when people use hyperbole like that.
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexusEnglish
4 daysFair enough - wasn’t really reaching for hyperbole, it really was longer in my mind

It also gateway drug. Soon you’ll be designing vehicles, planes, spaceships, bases and factories in lego style block by block.
Only thing that can save you is a grown mans lack of time.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
5 daysIf you enjoy legos and you enjoy computer games, then you can enjoy minecraft
- eodur@piefed.socialEnglish6 days
If you like Minecraft checkout Luanti. Open source, extensible with Lua, has most Minecraft features, and a huge community of new kinda of games and addons. Really really cool.
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zipEnglish
5 daysYou might also like terraria, which is ostensibly like 2D mine minecraft but has more focus on progression.
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexusEnglish
4 daysAnd if you like Terraria, Core Keeper and Necesse might be right down the alley for you too!
tigeruppercut@lemmy.zipEnglish
4 daysNecesse looks like it might have more base management than I usually want to deal with. Core Keeper looks pretty fun though
Wildmimic@anarchist.nexusEnglish
4 daysYeah, you are right, base management is an integral part to Necesse.
Core Keeper is so cute!it changes the Foreground/Background recipe of Terraria to a 3d- Floor/Walls receipe, which works great in the way they have implemented it.
- IamMoonPie@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Make sure to grab T-mod loader too!
Terraria is an absolute blast. I have entire save that’s strictly for building. I can get so lost in the sauce playing that game.
- Psythik@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
You like Minecraft for all the reasons I don’t. I much prefer a game that is more like a cinematic experience, than a sandbox where you make your own story. I’m not that creative.
SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.worldEnglish
6 daysThis is what having to deal with insufferable yinzers for 19 years will do to a man. I’ve got the Rimworld saves to prove it.
TimboSlice@discuss.onlineEnglish
6 daysI watched his first video the other day. It’s so crazy seeing him so into it, I would have never guessed. Basically, he got into it because his kids were playing it and he wanted to see how a game could consume so much of their attention. Combine that with his interest in architecture and now he’s got a 12 year old city. Very cool.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
5 days“I don’t get it, how could the kids spend 12 hours on a saturday playing a computer game, while hardly even taking any breaks?”
…72 hours later…
“Finally! My third diamond. Now I can make a diamond pickaxe and mine some obsidian so I can build a nether portal. And then maybe I’ll have a snack and start thinking about sleeping for a few hours so that tomorrow I can track down a fortress and fight some blazes to take their powder so I canfinally start brewing potions”
…12 hours later (without eating or sleeping)…
“DIE BLAZE!!! WAHAHAHAHAAA!!!”

My mum tried minecraft to see what all the fuss was about and she loves it. Its been a great way to connect with the younger members of the family who live in other parts of the country. Its funny they all run around getting her gear and materials and trying to stop her from dying. Shes a good builder as well, made some stuff using unique patterns i’ve never seen in my time playing.
- BillCheddar@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
I can’t wait to see the film about this, starring Omar Epps, in theaters 2028.
