Wherever I wander I wonder whether I’ll ever find a place to call home…

  • Eh, they’re an evil company and all that, but the force majeure seems like a non-issue:

Instead, the notice would allow the company to delay payments should the facility miss its 2028 target to come online.

It just means if the development misses the contractual deadline, they don’t have to pay until it comes on line. Seems reasonable to be honest, why should you be held to your end of the contract if the other party doesn’t meet theirs?

The real problem here is a combination of: the environmental and ecological impacts of the data center, the impacts on the local communities, the ethics (or lackthereof) of AI and lack of regulatory oversight, and the surveillance state that they’re using it to build.

Focusing your critique on the force majeure just kind of misses the point

  • Yeah, the party of “fiscal responsibility” is always like “WHERE WOULD WE GET THE MONEY FOR THAT?!!?!?” whenever it comes to a cause that’s actually important or would help people.

“The same place you always get the money for your greedy money-grubbing ventures that exclusively benefit you and your cronies” is what I would tell them.

If we just stop sending billions and trillions of dollars to the already rich, then maybe we could fix society and save the planet?

But no, there’s never “money for that”…

  • If I already had a solid group of friends, I wouldn’t really care for meeting new people. If someone cool comes along, awesome. Welcome to the group.

But why would I actively go out and try to sift through the 95%+ of people at bars who are either A) shitty, B) don’t give a fuck about me, or C) both; just to try to find one or two new people that I might exchange a couple texts with over the next two weeks before we proceed to forget about each other entirely?

If I already have friends at home who just wanna hang out and play Mario Kart or Magic: The Gathering or Catan or something? Why would I need to talk to strangers, most of whom would just tell me to get bent anyway…

  • I didn’t attack you, I said your talking points are similar to the ones I hear from the right-wing disinfo sphere. If you take that as a personal attack then maybe it’s time for you to look in a mirror and examine your media consumption?

I didn’t simply “not like some issue” you brought up, I disagreed on multiple points and explained why. Is that not acceptable to you?

your objection would make perfect sense if the headline was all about the cost to drive a stolen car.

Strawman argument. I never said that, and neither did the headline. It said “cost to drive,” not “cost to acquire and drive.” It did not imply that it would include the initial cost, and only a misreading could result in interpreting it that way.

Just like the “cost to run” a fridge is about the average daily kWh draw, and has nothing to do with the initial cost of purchasing the fridge.

Energy Star labels don’t start with “assuming you steal this fridge…” in fine print. They just tell you the estimated cost to run it every day.

  • Sounds like big oil propaganda you’re spouting. These are the kinds of talking points I hear from right-wing media.

The truth is EV technology has advanced quite a bit in recent years, and the batteries don’t deprecate as quickly as the anti-solar crowd still claims.

And as someone else already pointed out, EV maintenance is cheaper because there are less parts.

And road tax for EVs is bullshit, but the reason for it is that combustion vehicles already pay it because it’s factored into the price of gas. Or maybe that’s not the same in the UK?

Also, the headline doesn’t claim that the total expense drops to ⅑th, it says the cost to drive it does. That’s a very different claim from the one you’re pretending they tried to make.
