he didn’t go into detail about what made these calls so “contentious” and “disastrous,”

Amazing, you distilled 5k words into 1 sentence.
(OK, that sounds way too sarcastic when it isn’t my intention)

Well if you think about it, it might be hard to adapt a video game about a dude going into a reclusive city under the ocean where the rich and powerful harvest little girls to make drugs which gives them superpowers.
Unless I’m remembering that part wrong?
- 6 days
Specifically, it’s a libertarian “utopia” that couldn’t have worked in ideal circumstances, let alone under the ocean where cooperation and fight for the common good - thus rewarding the actual workers - would be a necessity to survive.
Ryan Cohen gives a grand speech at the beginning of the game, about how capitalism, communism, etc. takes away from the workers, the artists, from those who actually work. And how Rapture is different, putting emphasis on a very… Randian view of individualist libertarianism. No regulations, no taxes, no government, everyone does their best and gets the best life, singing kumbaya. Right?
Hell no. The society quickly picks up the worst parts of communism, capitalism, and everything in-between. Workers are exploited, to the point where, just to keep things going, all maintenance (Big Daddies) get genetically modified, spliced into their suits, and brainwashed into doing the most dangerous jobs. Little girls (orphans first, then poor people’s kids, at the end even the rich and powerful families’ kids aren’t safe) are kidnapped, also genetically and biologically modified, for the sole purpose of producing (and extracting from corpses) ADAM, the substance that allows the genetic modification in the first place…
So yeah I can see why it wouldn’t be adapted to a movie, especially after Epstein’s first arrest for child sex trafficking.

At one point gore verbinski was trying to get an adaptation of bioshock off the ground as well. He couldn’t get the financing unless agreed to make it pg-13, but he was only interested in making a hard r-rated version.

It’s funny because we used to have such a thing as XXX, to distinguish from “just X” but I guess RRR doesnt work as well?
I suppose people might think they are pirate movies, hah!
- m4xie@lemmy.caEnglish5 days
RRR is one of my favorite movies! It’s age rated NR in the west but I think that only really shows how weighed the system is against nudity and sexual themes and discounts a great deal of violence.
- Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
As it should be, what out of touch suited stooge would think you could pull off BioShock at the same rating as shrek?
- GraniteM@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
I wonder if this was before or after A Cure For Wellness, because there’s a fair amount of overlap between ACFW and BioShock.
- _m_cubed_@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Here’s a recent article that goes into some more detail. It looks like they were in active planning around 2008-2013ish.

dive deeply into the Oedipal aspect
keep it hard R
really f***ing with people’s heads
demented art-deco aesthetic
A Cure For Wellness was 2016. Verbinsky definitely brought some of his notes from BioShock with him.
- Cethin@lemmy.zipEnglish5 days
Everyone here seems to be assuming it would follow the same story as the game, and saying it wouldn’t work as well. Obviously it wouldn’t. That one was made for a game. That isn’t the only story you can tell with Bioshock though, as evidenced by Bioshock 2. There’s a lot of room for new stories in Rapture if they wanted to do it.

Maybe the producer insisted the plot must include a giant mechanical spider.

I’m not sure the ending twist would sit well with movie audiences. I’m still not sure how I feel about
spoiler
the fact that you play as a three-year-old accelerated aged clone of Andrew Ryan :::
Edit: it took me way too long to figure out that formatting. It’s entirely counterintuitive to any other social site I’ve used before.
- 5 days
Not sure if that was intended, but on piefed/voyager, the spoiler tag in your comment doesnt work. I think the three colons and the spoiler keyword shouldnt be separated.
Edit : it works now !
- FlihpFlorp@piefed.zipEnglish6 days
that might be a you issue (and issyou if you’re so inclined) as I’m on voyager too and the spoiler tag is working
Maybe they edited it and fixed it would be my guess
- fibojoly@sh.itjust.worksEnglish6 days
I dunno about takapapatakapata but as for me, I see plain text in Jerboa
- 5 days
I think they did, cuz it works now for me as well. The problem was probably the tag and the content being on the same line ? Anyway thanks for pointing it out
- 6 days
This is how to format it.
::: spoiler Visible text
Hidden text
:::For example
::: spoiler Secret
I’m your father.
:::Looks like
Secret
I’m your father.
- fibojoly@sh.itjust.worksEnglish6 days
Yep, that’s working in Jerboa. All three instances though I reckon your examples need code délimiters.
::: spoiler Visible hint Spoiler here :::working example
Whereas this is hidden
- Zahille7@lemmy.worldEnglish6 days
That’s weirdly convoluted and confusing. I use Summit, but you’d think some of these apps might have figured this out by now.
- aaaa@piefed.worldEnglish6 days
Just start your spoiler tag on a new line. It may not be intuitive, but it’s an easy fix
