Unaffordable games like Terraria, Celeste, Binding of Isaac, which i got for 5 euro each, or like btd6 which i got for only 1, or like vivid/stasis, unless, catgirl, or dracomaton which i got for free
All of these games are amazing that i have spent over 100 hours playing each(excluding binding of isaac since i got it recently and only have half that, catgirl and unless since they are short games, and dracomaton since it caused by motherboard to melt and am too afraid to open it again
- Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish9 hours
Buddy, Terraria and Binding of Isaac came out in 2011, they are closer to the 90s than they are to the present.
They’re retro games.
- atopi@piefed.blahaj.zoneEnglish21 minutes
The binding of isaac: rebirth is from 2014, repentance+, the latest dlc, has been released in 2014
Terraria is still getting free updates to this day, the last “big” update being released less than 2 months ago

13 hoursSame with movies.
It’s annoying when you ask someone if they’ve seen a film you loved. Only for when you start talking about it, they reveal they just watched a Youtube summary and ruined the whole thing for themselves…
- GreenKnight23@lemmy.worldEnglish13 hours
I just watch summaries for two reasons
- I don’t have the time to sit down for two or more hours to watch a story that’s riddled with plot holes
- Due to poor sound and visual editing from the last decade, I don’t have the patience to squint to see and read everything on subtitles
if I’m going to read anything it’s going to be a book or a foreign film that’s at least original and edited well.

There are a lot of good new games out there too, they’re all indie games though. Some of them are built for retro consoles too haha. The NES dev scene is really active
- brax@sh.itjust.worksEnglish11 hours
Yeah, that that GBStudio thing really made gameboy dev super accessible. There’s the NESmaker for NES stuff - it’s not the best, but it’s the easiest thing out there like it lol.
I often scrape itch for new NES stuff. There’s an SNES game jam going right now that I’m hoping will bring some fresh stuff to check out.

6 hoursI have a Miyoo Mini Plus, and these homebrew/Game Jam Games are really perfect for it.
I’ve been playing a pokemon Rom hack called Lazarus, and it feels like a fully featured, modern pokemon game, in a GBA style, without just aping Gen 3 assets. It’s a delight to play!
Same with Pico8 games. Getting pico8 to run natively on the Miyoo mini is pretty easy, and there are a ton of really cool, bite-sized little games available for free. A lot of them remind me of old flash games, in their simplicity.

If AAA gaming collapses for a couple years and investment money goes to smaller devs making games with less focus on obscenely detailed graphics and more focus on engaging gameplay and stories, I would be sooooo happy.
- 10 hours
Why? Then the devs you love would be controlled by investors and shareholders. You won’t be likely to get the games you love anymore.
AAA studios already have the ability to fix the problem, they just don’t want to:
- Fire more people to reduce studio size, there is no reason to have more than like 150 people, realistically
- Focus on smaller projects that can be developed faster
- Put all the game content in the game at launch
- Smaller game means less dev time and more and better bug fixing
- Make a fun game first, then decide the details
For some reason they think that retaining every single employee and developing impossibly huge games is more important though.

It’s just like old music. People have been making music since the dawn of time, and the ratio of good to shit music was relatively constant. The only thing is, shit music tends to be forgotten over time, whereas the greats still survive.
People that are into old music, regardless of the period, are almost by definition listening to a curated bunch of greatest hits. Ditto for retro gaming: the by-the-numbers, derivative or unplayable crap is long forgotten.

20 hoursI have to disagree. The amount of high quality games has never been higher, and there is something for every kind of player available. And i can remember a ton of absolutely awful games from the 90s and 00s.
AAA studios having enshittified doesn’t mean that you have to go retro to find a great game.
SorteKanin@feddit.dkEnglish
10 hoursYea really it’s more a distinction between indie games and AAA games. The indie scene has never been better honestly.
- Caveman@lemmy.worldEnglish18 hours
I stick to indie games because my computer can’t handle anything else. On average they’re more fun and have a lot more novelty to the compared to the lowest common denominator AAA games.
- dylanmorgan@slrpnk.netEnglish17 hours
The one silver lining from the RAM “crisis” is that more games will be made to use lower resources.
- creamfresh@lemmy.worldEnglish21 hours
Revisionism. Releasing questionable quality because the moneypeople were pushing for it has always happened in the past. People who remember are just less likely to scream online about it.
- shads@leminal.spaceEnglish21 hours
There’s also a healthy dose of survivorship bias. The truly terrible games have faded into obscurity back when I got my first Amiga I played “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” for a few weeks, because that was one of the two pack in games. Guess how many times I have revisited that steaming pile of Tiertex shit since then?
- taiyang@lemmy.worldEnglish17 hours
I’m glad someone mentioned survivorship bias. I used to do a fun little “True Random” roulette with some rom packs I had (basically every game ever made prior to PS2) and a vast majority were pretty awful. The challenge we had was to play at least 30 minutes, but that was so rough sometimes.
- shads@leminal.spaceEnglish16 hours
It’s tough though, I have played a few games I used to love back in the day over the last few years that are not what I remember at all. Can’t help but feel like my struggle is with going back to a gameplay style that’s evolved far past the games that are locked in time. I beat Dune 2 with all 3 factions as a teenager, struggled to play it for an hour last year. It’s hard to go back to one of the grand daddies of the RTS genre when you have gotten used to modern interfaces, controls, and features.
- taiyang@lemmy.worldEnglish14 hours
I think of those things as additional challenges, but it kind of depends on the game. RTS, Dune 2 definitely hasn’t aged well compared to Starcraft, for instance. To be fair, Dune 2 is like the first major RTS, though. Lol
But that’s partly what I meant by my post, True Random time with my friends is more of a “suffering is content” moment, haha. Playing an FPS with tank controls is infuriating!
I’m personally looking forward to RetroAchevements adding support for MSDOS sometime in the next year, though, because I like the challenge of jank ass games. I’ll probably play Dune 2, after I finish all Heroes of Might and Magic 1 and 2, haha.
- creamfresh@lemmy.worldEnglish20 hours
Yes. Crappy games also stayed crappy forever because there were no patches.

You got me wondering what happened to Tiertex and I was surprised to find that they were still trading as recently as 2021!

18 hoursI stick mostly to retro games and indie games, these days. The AAA space doesn’t hold a lot of appeal to me these days, but I have played so many great recent indie games, and games from smaller development studios.

I recently bought an N64 and started browsing the Internet with Links via an Apple IIe. Strongly recommend ditching the modern World.
- cattywampas@lemmy.worldEnglish19 hours
N64 is an interesting choice for this topic. I love N64 games for the nostalgia, but I think the early 3D generation has aged worse than most video game generations.
- runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zoneEnglish17 hours
I’ve been playing dk64 on the switch emulator recently, and partially agree. The gameplay has been really fun, but the camera controls are a bit rage inducing. There was 1 mini game I had to do like 20 times to beat, due to the horrible semi fixed camera.
- cattywampas@lemmy.worldEnglish16 hours
Yeah. I can deal with graphics of any fidelity but the camera and controls of the early 3D era were rough.
- taiyang@lemmy.worldEnglish17 hours
It’s a very good collectathon but I had more fun doing it alongside RetroAchevements. One advantage was the comments on the specific mini games helped because there was sometimes a trick to it (one was literally unplayable on my version, you had to abuse pause to win).
