I can’t imagine the venn diagram of people who still use discord and people who game on linux has that much of an overlap does it? Like cmon it’s got to be the worst possible of all the options. You’d be more secure sending a plaintext email to someone.
bitjunkie@lemmy.worldEnglish
1 hourHow do you even release a voice chat app without push-to-talk capability?
- zemo@lemmy.worldEnglish2 hours
Wouldn’t want that malware on my machine. So sick of every online community default to the shithole that is Discord.

Discord is rolling out global…
Goddamnit, what bullshit are they doing now?!?!
shortcut support (e.g. Push to Talk) on Wayland for Linux users
Oh… Well we got good news for once
- BreakingBigfoot@lemmus.orgEnglish2 hours
I’m not sure why I’d be installing actual Discord on Linux; I’m sure there should be an open-source fork somewhere that’s less resource-hungry and less intrusive to the system… Just saying.
Semperverus@lemmy.worldEnglish
7 hoursI’m so confused. I am on KDE Wayland and have been using push to talk for like a year now. What even is this?
- yistdaj@pawb.socialEnglish5 hours
The ability to use push to talk while Discord is not the focused window.
- yistdaj@pawb.socialEnglish5 hours
Maybe it previously only kind of worked depending on setup? I remember I had trouble and I think I remember implementing a “fix” but at some point it stopped working for me.
From what I understand, what they’re doing now will work on all systems.
- MonkderVierte@lemmy.zipEnglish10 hours
Still please don’t use it to host your source code. Or to communicate critical info.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
15 hoursTo be fair, it wasn’t the fault of Discord this time. The Wayland developers took their time, because they couldn’t agree (until now).
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
5 hoursIt wasn’t finished and final about one or two months before. They were discussing the global shortcuts portal for about 10 years, with different portals and revisions, and they just couldn’t agree on. Now its official and final recommendation. Some desktop environments used some draft versions, and everyone did it in a slightly different way, so that it wasn’t a real standard yet. And many other window managers or desktop environments didn’t even attempt it. Therefore many tools didn’t use the half baked portal and chaos everywhere.
MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zipEnglish
16 hoursMeh, I already have a global mute shortcut. I have a keyboard shortcut for this script I found somewhere that toggles mic audio capture in ALSA.
mic_on=$(amixer get Capture | grep '\[on\]')if [ "$mic_on" = "" ] ; thenamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-added.ogaelseamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-removed.ogafi thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
15 hoursThis will mute all applications. While a workaround for your setup, on other use cases it wouldn’t work if the user wants to mute a specific application only.
Dr. Wesker@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish
1 dayI’d recommend Stoat because they won’t rape you for all the personal data they can.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
15 hoursApp looks very similar too. But friends, other devs and communities aren’t using it. Their privacy agreements seems to be much better than Discord, especially because their servers are located in Europe. But one should still understand this is not entirely private either. Note, I am not dunking on this service, just want to remember people to read privacy notices:

An alternative could also be Matrix, which at least is decentralized: https://matrix.org/
- 2 hours
There’s also XMPP as an alternative. And Fluxer.
Matrix, XMPP, and (now) Fluxer all have federation between servers, though they all use different protocols. I know there’s a bridge between Matrix and XMPP too
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
2 hoursI know of XMPP, but never looked closer. A quick research to find differences and similarities lead to a post / page from Luke Smith. Didn’t heard this name for a long time… https://lukesmith.xyz/articles/matrix-vs-xmpp/
Dr. Wesker@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish
8 hoursTrue story: one weekend I convinced my friends and family to try Matrix instead, and within the first day of using it someone spammed them with CSAM. That was the last of trying Matrix.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
8 hoursThis is horrible, but its not like a Matrix only issue. I used Matrix a few times, but stopped because most people aren’t there. Never had an issue like CSAM or similar. In example someone got hacked by an exploit in the Linux Kernel. Does that mean everyone should stop using Linux?
Dr. Wesker@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish
7 hoursI just simply can’t and won’t ask friends and family to try it again after they experienced that.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
7 hoursDon’t get me wrong, I understand your situation. It’s also embarrassing and traumatic, especially because you had experienced it yourself. I just meant this in general, that people should not be afraid of trying Matrix, because YOU had these terrible experience.
Derin@lemmy.beru.coEnglish
8 hoursThat was a coordinated attack that happened for a brief period. As a guy who runs his own home server, trust me when I say it was a nightmare for all involved.
That’s over, now that there are strong protections in place to prevent those sorts of attacks.
Also, if you’re trying to just use something between friends and family you can always turn off federation (E.g. Have matrix act just like the alternatives where you have one network and are only communicating with local accounts).
So glad I don’t have to wake up every morning and purge all remote media from the prior evening 😂
- 1 day
I’d recommend Fluxer over Stoat. Seems to be gaining more users and traction in a fraction of Stoat’s time.
- aksdb@lemmy.worldEnglish19 hours
I recommend Haven if your focus (!) is self hosting. Just a single container.
Chatto is also quite interesting (especially architecturally), but I dislike event sourcing without ability to technically prune old stuff. Also it’s closer to Slack than Discord.
- Victor@lemmy.worldEnglish17 hours
Trying to get my friends to try Fluxer as well. 🫠 Maybe one day. I’m refusing discord though, so when they play with me they are forced to talk to me using Steam’s voice chat.
Dr. Wesker@lemmy.sdf.orgEnglish
1 dayThe lights are barely kept on for our Lemmy instance, I don’t expect a Stoat server anytime soon…

If they enjoy discord, they are likely okay with Twitter. At best you would see Discord on Bluesky.

Can’t wait to see how this will result in another massive leak of personal data that they totally don’t retain.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
18 hoursWhat has this anything to do with leaking personal data? This is about the global shortcuts, that can be used while your operating system focus is on another application. This is a long standing issue on Wayland and just recently got solved I think. And Discord being one of the first to make use of this new Wayland “feature” is absurd (in a good way). So I don’t understand where you coming from with this statement.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
18 hoursWhat exactly do you want tell me with that? I should search for data leaks through a search engine? This does not address my point whatsoever. We are talking about global shortcuts protocol from Wayland here, has nothing to do with data leaks: https://flatpak.github.io/xdg-desktop-portal/docs/doc-org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts.html
- 18 hours
“What exactly do you want tell me with that? I should” click on those links?
I’m guessing their point was to do with the 1st word in the title of the thread.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
18 hoursBut your link does not address my issue, you are talking about data leaks. But the global shortcuts on Wayland has nothing to do with Discord dataleaks that happened in the past. You are conflicting two different topics here. Click the link I provided (its not a search link, its an actual result) and read through to understand what global shortcuts are.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
17 hoursThis has nothing to do with data leaks. Global shortcuts just mean that if you focus on a different application, then you can still control the application in background with shortcuts like Ctrl+1. That’s all. This changes nothing about data collection or data leaking.
- SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish15 hours
Oh my god. Push to talk.
:o
Holy fuck.
Linux didn’t have the most basic voice chat function up to now??? :O
They STILL don’t???
What the actual
Checks original release date for ventrilo
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
15 hoursIt was an issue with Wayland. Before that we had X11, where global shortcuts wasn’t an issue.
- SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zoneEnglish15 hours
Apple phones used to have headphone jacks, removable batteries, and expandable memory.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
14 hoursWe didn’t lost shortcuts to everything. It’s only about global shortcuts, all other still work. And given the Wayland global shortcuts are now functional and officially supported, its not the same situation anymore. The difference to iPhones is, that you cannot do anything about it on iPhone. On Wayland however desktops environments such as KDE, GNOME and Hyperland could implement a custom variant (or the draft version of the portal) and have it functional; it was just not a standard.
So no, the situation is not entirely comparable. We are not at mercy by one single company.
thingsiplay@lemmy.mlEnglish
14 hoursYou know that the Wayland portal for global shortcuts took 10 years discussions before they finally settled in, right? Off course it is to blame the Wayland devs (those responsible for this portal), not Discord.
