Just think, the next data breach will now include your government issued ID!

Discord is out there tripping itself over, quietly poking TeamSpeak “hey, maybe you could make a comeback to break our VoIP monopoly?”, meanwhile TS sits it out quietly developing at a snail’s pace.
Then we’ve got Stoat, Fluxer, and what’s not currently the trending obscure alternative (think like Guilded was too). They’re all too obscure, and most of time these apps are unsigned & lack notarisation so their code safety is a matter of “trust me” (a wise person doesn’t install random junk on their PC, regardless of it being FOSS or not - one rogue maintainer is enough to bring risk; unless they’ve gone even half as serious as Debian or other highly reputable FOSS). Adding to their obscurity, I doubt anybody is going to materialise new friends into existence by sheer willpower, will they?
Unless something happens that makes the casual Discorders jump off their platform, these hiccups are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, they’re serious. No, they still won’t make people ditch Discord - at worst they’ll keep obscure platform XYZ for contacting friend group 1, and still use Discord for their daily communities and acquaintances who don’t keep up with any tech news (like privacy leaks) at all.
That’s just some food for thought, I’m not actually going to debate about what I wrote (no time for such things!) Nevertheless, I sincerely hope Discord flops over, and a bunch of better alternatives appears.

Discord is less a messaging platform these days as just like an open source data aggregation service for cyber criminals. It’s like they have a huge data leak every 6 months or so.

Oh no!!
…wait nevermind I already deleted my account a long time aggo.

2 daysBasically, it’s the worst Discord hack via a third-party service provider since the last Discord hack via a third-party service provider, which occurred almost a year to the day ago – spooky!
LOL wow that thing that everyone said would happen, happened. Again.

Deleted my Discord a long time ago since I rarely used it, the only thing that sucks is when trying to do game jams with others it’s the only option, so I haven’t been able to do any…
But still this is better than having Discord.- ThunderComplex@lemmy.todayEnglish23 hours
idk, I only see discord links when checking game jam community pages, and since I don’t have a need for a chat app I’ve never investigated any alternatives

Nah, go to Fluxer, it’s better and its getting Federation support

Aint no way I’m convincing my friends to switch again, looks cool though

Oh, good. Hadn’t seen a Discord data breach article in a short while so was wondering if I’d slipped into a coma. All is normal.

2 daysI was worried that Discord became secure. I had nothing to worry about it seems.

Honestly just save it to your phone, it’s needed on lemmy so much

Here’s a trick, save a comment of the gif, then you can copy the markup of the gif that’s already been uploaded
- Tanis Nikana@lemmy.worldEnglish1 day
Set a keyboard shortcut to &rachelmamdani to replace that with the markup, and it’s at your fingertips!
Could even shorten it to &rm!

If only matrix was as usable as discord I’m sure a lot of people would
- dragonlover@lemmy.zipEnglish1 day
It is. People just need to use an app that actually cares about good UI like Cinny/Sable. Element is trash.
Sable has every feature I could want and then some

Stoat chat seems pretty decent open source alternative to Discord, tried it for a while and has similar usability, but same issue, “nobody uses it”, also development has been very slow.
- NocturnalMorning@lemmy.worldEnglish23 hours
I tried stoat, but I couldn’t create the same community that I had on Discord that I had set up, so I haven’t tried to move everything there. Honestly, if there was a Discord alternative that functioned similar, I would move there tomorrow, but there really isn’t. And there’s no easy way to mirror the content from Discord to the other place so people can see the activity.
- Starski@lemmy.zipEnglish1 day
I’ve been liking stoat, I only really used discord to communicate with my friends and luckily they were nice enough to humour me with making an account, so now stoats pretty much all I use, even if my friends are still using discord on the side
- partzel@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
It is more than usuable though, my only issue with it is the lack of communities other than that both apps and servers are pretty reliable imo

It sometimes takes an eternity or two to decrypt my messages, making me really want to agree here.

23 hoursFirstly, it already is. It depends on what client you use.
Secondly, no they wouldn’t. Even when all the work is done for them, nobody moves because nobody cares even when they say they do.

I’ll consider it once its been federated. Otherwise its just jumping from one basket to another basket

And yet Discord still blocks using anonaddy addresses to sign up.

1 dayI always hated how invasive double counter was. Besides being a bouncer it’s also been used a stalking tool to find out peoples alt accounts and harass them.
