  • I’m not sure what point you think you are making here. I already agreed that their owners are bad. I already agreed that people who eat there don’t care about the other people who are hurt by the owners’ policies/practices. And racist fuckheads account for a minor percent of literally every business that has ever sold a product.

Also, I would be careful equating the owners of a large corporation donating money to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations with Jim Crow laws. There’s just a slight difference in level of impact, and it might be offensive to a large number of people.

  • I got somewhat forced into one at a Rally’s the other day when I was in a rush and couldn’t be bothered to go somewhere else. It was a terrible experience, both because of the AI and because the food was just awful.

The burrito place near me tried doing an AI ordering thing for their phone service, but I never could get it to work. I told them that it didn’t work, and they gave me the magic words to skip to a human.

  • As much as you think that matters to everyone else as much as it matters to you, you are wrong.

You aren’t wrong about what their owners do and what supporting them funds. But 99/100 people going to Chick Fil A just want a damn chicken sandwich. They don’t think about the owners or politics. They think about going somewhere that is fast, easy, and relatively tasty (compared to other fast food places).

Blind loyalty only accounts for a very minor percent of their business.

  • Back when credit cards had to take paper carbon copies from a subset of retailers that had been certified to take credit, try their damnedest to decipher the faint blue numbers and names, verify the account information by hand, take on significant risk for higher purchase prices due to lower computer capabilities, then process the billing… Yeah, I can see why they charged 3% to every transaction.

Nowadays, all of that is automated and digital and proliferated. There is no reason why AMEX should get $0.50 from every purchase of a Happy Meal. There is also no reason why Visa should get more money from a $20 purchase than it gets from a $100 purchase. It’s the same amount of work! Same argument about TicketMaster charging a $200 convenience fee on a $500 ticket but only $100 on a $250 ticket.

  • It’s only more efficient when I use it, which sounds like a joke about “it’s only wrong when someone else does it.” But if I am only buying a quart of ice cream and some toilet paper, I actually can scan those faster because I don’t have to pass them to a person to scan them for me. My typical use case is roughly the same speed as a cashier. I also know how to use the machines fairly well.

However, your last sentence is exactly right. Once one idiot gets to self-checkout, the whole thing goes to shit for everyone. Or if something doesn’t scan, or it is a bottle of Nyquil that some stores require ID to buy, then it is so much longer to get a person over to help you.
