Boo Cloudflare, but I still love the idea. Given that I’m not planning to turn in this current phone for a few dollars of “credit” when I need to replace it, this seems like a cool weekend project!

It’s simpler than that. Humans have a negativity bias, which has generally served our evolutionary ancestors by avoiding any “rustling in bushes” as potential tigers. These days, it’s weaponized by social media platforms and news outlets to seize people’s attention and manipulate their perceptions.
And given that most people have no idea how AI actually works, when the news reports the claptrap that the people making it are “”“worried”“” that their creation will imminently kill us all and please invest more money in this see how capable it is please god we are bleeding money, people take it as gospel that our demise is imminent and are looking for ways to avoid it.

It’s worse than that. Not only are people going with the AI Overview as gospel, the search results themselves have nothing to do with the normal SEO that’s been the standard for the last 20+ years. People are picking the AI Summary, because the search itself is fundamentally broken.
Gone are the days that website content + traffic determine the order or relevance. Now websites have to include specifically formatted fluff that the AI summarizers like in order to show as relevant results. Just ask Louis Rossman.

It doesn’t help that the people currently in charge are fucking stupid, trigger happy, and emotionally insecure.
Certainly a cool idea, and I hope it succeeds and turns out to be what it seems.
No price listed on their crowd fund page, so who can say what this might cost? Uses a Raspberry Pi Zero W for the brains and a STM32 for the cartridge board.

That’s the core problem. The wealthy capitalists both own and drive the development of ML right now. I agree that machine learning algorithms (AI) in a vacuum aren’t inherently a problem, but that’s just a hypothetical position versus the material reality we all face every day.
Maybe we’ll get global Socialism or Communism someday, but trying to convince people that AI is fundamentally good underneath it all is putting the cart before the horse; AI as it stands is a symbol of Capitalism and the problems it embodies.
Worry about the nuances of AI after you’ve dealt with the rot.

Is this some new money laundering thing? Are companies “buying in” to hobnob with other wealthy people? Is this just the latest Country Club or whatever?
I seriously don’t understand why all these companies are throwing money at a project that is almost assuredly going to “mismanage” it.

I wish they’d do a cheap “Nitro Classic” style tier, rather than just having only “Nitro Premium”.

“Digg watches what 1,000 of the most thoughtful voices in AI are paying attention to, and ranks the stories they’re pointing at by what’s rising fastest,” Rose said.
…
It also uses AI from services such as xAI, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini to “classify public accounts, summarize public posts and linked articles, describe public media, generate topic labels, score public content and power search.” That would explain how Digg quantifies user sentiment into a percentage for its posts.
Focus on AI. AI apologists from Xitter. Powered by AI summarizers.
Barf.
OpenAI had their little failure of a presentation recently, and they’re introducing a “fast response” tier for 6x the current subscription cost. This is their attempt to get people used to higher pricing. They are bleeding money, and they will need to raise prices sooner than later to start attempting to make it back.
Once they do, a good chunk of their customers will simply stop paying, forcing the AI companies to further raise prices, causing more customers to leave, etc.
AI companies are trying (and failing) to be indispensable, and they need that to have any hope of survival. It’s only a matter of time before they collapse, and only then might we see what’s actually beneficial about machine learning.
