I’m excited for memories as well, but I’m not sure you’re using the phrase deal breaker correctly here haha.

4tb it pretty high. I back up my files to backblaze, HDDs on site, and a cold copy on HDDs off-site.
Unfortunately thumbnails/titles are everything, and this style works. YouTube tried (and somewhat succeeded) in making it better by rewarding engaged views, but now they’ve taken a step backwards by hiding that metric.
Of course, I’m the only one who watches YouTube the correct way, bookmarking the subscriptions tab, adding all of the videos from my creators to my watch later, then watching that playlist. I only hit up the home tab if I run out of stuff to watch.
Technology@lemmy.world•Hope you like RCS, because Google Messages plans to remove this easy way to turn it offbyJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
3 daysI heard RCS was due to open up any day now. I heard that like 5 years ago. I want to be able to use Textra (or other 3rd party texting apps) again. I fucking hate that I’m locked into Google messages if I want to be able to send high res photos and whatnot to my non-techy friends and family.
They’re in my attached garage. In the living room when it’s quiet I can hear them humming. Does that count?

5 daysI also need new hobbies.
I’d second that. Whenever I catch myself getting angry at a LLM I stop, have a think, and remind myself that it really isn’t productive. If it’s providing frustrating responses, maybe I should just use my brain and do it myself.
I also don’t think it’s healthy to train yourself to respond in those ways to something that talks in a way so similar to a human. I’m not nice to the AI for it’s benifit, it’s to retain my humanity, if that makes sense.
Linux@lemmy.ml•What's your favorite linux os you suggest to beginners who wish to learn linux?byJoelk111@lemmy.world
5 daysI’m really curious why though. Was it raw Ubuntu with the default Gnome based DE or Kubuntu? I started with Manjaro and went back to windows a while back. Now I’m on Kubuntu and loving it. I think the main difference is that there’s so much more support and whatnot with Ubuntu.

5 daysI think this is terrible advice lol. I switched to Kubuntu from Windows a while back and it’s been great. I even tried a Gnome based DE and hated it. Kubuntu just works. It was familiar then and continues to be familiar and practical.
Technology@lemmy.world•‘Has flat buttocks,’ ‘cusses when scared’: Amazon keeps shockingly specific customer profilesbyJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
6 daysYou don’t even have to purchase something several times. I bought two of the same monitor once and now it thinks I have a preference for that no-name brand. It’s pretty dang dumb.

6 daysMine is pretty meh. Gets a lot right, but thinks I have a dog and I prefer zigbee. I have a cat (that I’ve bought dog accessories for) and prefer Z wave, but usually buy those things elsewhere.
Most of the things it has are directly related to a single purchase that I remember. It thinks I like a certain brand of monitor because I bought two of them for secondary monitors once. They are no-name monitors and I could not care less about the brand. It’s pretty basic shit. I could probably write the algorithm for it.
Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsbyJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
6 daysDepends on how much I’m buying. If I’m doing a bi-weekly shopping run, I’ll be way slower at self check. If it’s just a few things, I’m quicker.
I’ve never heard of mobile checkout though.
Technology@lemmy.world•Chick-fil-A takes a stand against fast-food drive-thru AI trendbyJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
7 daysFair point, but I’d struggle to forgive a business even more than a person. Sometimes it also doesn’t matter if they change if what they’ve done is awful enough.
Technology@lemmy.world•McDonald's is reportedly using AI to "dynamically" price its burgersbyJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysI mostly miss the fries tbh. Fortunately a brewery near me has the bombest fries I’ve ever had, but sometimes you do just want those garbage McDonald’s fries.

13 daysDoes it taste nice? I quit fast food 3 years ago but of all the things they serve, I don’t miss their burgers. Their fries and nuggets maybe, but I never want a McDonald’s burger. They just aren’t good at all, not by any metric.
Technology@lemmy.world•Your car is a smartphone on wheels: A team of researchers tested 21 vehicles and found that all of them transmitted data to a third-party domain. And over half were pinging advertising companies.byJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysI hate this style of titles. I’m a gearhead and own 5 vehicles and a motorcycle. None of them are a smartphone on wheels, the newest one is newly 20 years old.
Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Self-Hosting Survey 2026: What are your favorite self-hosted apps?byJoelk111@lemmy.worldEnglish
15 daysOh my god I need LubeLogger. I only looked it up because of the… questionable… name but I currently use Fuelio and I hadn’t even thought to look up a self hosted thing.

I create videos for YouTube/PeerTube and backup all of the raw footage. The actual storage count is currently 130TB in my main NAS with about 250TB for an offsite cold storage backup (as most of my data doesn’t change much) and on-site live-ish backup. I also have the benefit of being able to get reputable used commercial grade HDDs from work for $10/TB, even right now, it makes it way too easy. Shameless plug of my PeerTube instance: https://joeltube.com/ or @JoelKalich on YouTube.
