7 minutesThe project lead himself says the game is not very good, lol. Still, very cool project. And a meaningful attempt at preservation.

The project doesn’t use generative AI, and he notes: “We wanted to wait until the end of the year to release, but sadly due to how powerful AI is becoming, it became clear to us that in order to avoid all of our hard work being for nothing, it was now or never.”
I wonder what he means by that. Is there a rival team using AI also working on this?

It would be trivial to pop a couple hundred bucks into an AI and get a garbage translation for the entire game, along with a codebase buggification. It sucks, but they wanted to beat the modern iteration of script kiddies to the market.

No, that’s not it. AI has made huge leaps in reverse engineering games this past year. Not translating the text but figuring out the underlying code from the machine code output. It’s why there’s been a big wave of “mashup” games lately, the biggest step in a fan-made remake used to take several years but it can be done in a day through brute force trial and error.
Whether or not you support AI at large (I sure don’t), this is kind of the “perfect” use for it and it is pretty interesting. Many of the AI-decompiled projects have nearly identical code, they’re not just slop recreations.
The implications of these developments go far beyond video games. Security through obscurity can no longer cut it

10 hoursThe AI version of whatever the fuck a “Chinese Exclusive Borderlands MMO” is… well that sounds like a wet nightmare you’d have after overdosing on cough syrup at a Russell Brand sleepover featuring Jared Leto on vocals.

I really don’t get the sentiment.
- if someone releases an AI version and it’s crap, regardless which was released first
- if someone releases the AI version and it’s good, where’s the harm? That would clearly show that the person using AI knows what they’re doing and aren’t just a skiddie doing half-assed prompts until it runs, just barely.
