I’d argue we already have a well done spiritual successor, check out Moonring. It’s free.
Personally, I never played the older Ultima games, I’ve mostly experienced them through YouTube essays. But, a solid 60% of the positive steam reviews for Moonring reference Ultima, as does the game’s own description, so I’d say it probably fits the bill.

I went to one of those, around 2010ish. I have many, many consecutive hours of bitching that I could do about it, but suffice to say it’s exactly as bad as you’d expect.
I made some really good friends there, though, some of which I’m still in touch with. Out of the five of us who hung out together, I think one of us graduated.
Personally, after I dropped out, I tried to transfer the nearly half a degree worth of credits that I had completed, only to find out that not a single one of those transfers to any other school due to some difference in the school’s accreditation, which we only learned about after I left it. Very pleased to learn that, I walked out of that school with $30k in student loan debt and literally nothing whatsoever to show for it.
This kind of shit is how arson happens, don’t fall for it.
