Technology@lemmy.world•Google is sending a teensy-tiny AI data center to space - Engadgetbyrounding_error@lemmy.todayEnglish
9 daysMaybe they saw Kyle Hill’s opinion video on AI space datacenters and said “challenge accepted” even though a cost-to-scale application would require a 10GW laser beam into space.

9 daysYeah, it’s really annoying how ads have become “Mr. Beastified” too. I can’t even turn a TV on without some attention sucking advert coming on that demands your full and centered attention. What was a chill afternoon feels more like a tax.
Technology@lemmy.world•‘I miss old Google’: readers tell us how they search the internet in the age of AIbyrounding_error@lemmy.todayEnglish
10 daysYep, but also I wouldn’t rely completely on one search engine. I’m using SearXNG and the most tolerant engines are Mojeek, Google, Yandex, and Ayo. Surprisingly, DDG, Startpage, Brave, and Dogpile all block me almost immediately.

13 daysIt’s a coreboot distribution (FOSS BIOS/UEFI), so technically it works on more things than advertised.
To install it it does require a little bit of preparation. There’s a lot of commands you have to run using a custom compiler toolchain to build an image for your board. The hardest part is disassembling the laptop, if you have an older one, which is mostly what Libreboot targets.

13 daysHas anyone noticed that when a teammate uses AI, their teammates also have to as well? Honestly it might be because they don’t want to bother reading the machine’s code when the original author didn’t put much thought into it. Another might be the mental fatigue from reading code that grows faster than you can parse.

13 daysFirst time?

Srs, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a consumer device that, as the other person points out, didn’t have blobs inside from the factory. Sure, ive manually replaced the BIOS with Libreboot and switched to blobless (software) WiFi chips, but then what about the EC blobs? The keyboard and mouse? If being fully FOSS predicates ownership, I don’t think any of us own our devices

What about prison slavery?
