I’m writing this status report a little early because this coming week (the week of the 28th of September 2026) is HardenedBSD quarterly release engineering week. On that note, I plan to cherry-pick a few “commits that smell like security” that FreeBSD recently made against their main branch into our 15-stable branch. I suspect over the next week or two, we might see a FreeBSD Security Advisory and/or Errata Notice.

Thanks to being subscribed to self-hosting and homelab feeds, I yet again was trapped by compulsive buying and collector’s impulse while browsing the local refurb marketplaces. This may end now. Until then, here’s a quick look at ThinkCentre M710q and M720q on various BSD systems.
Coming from DOS and Linux (and having largely ignored this on my OpenBSD systems – yeah, shame on me), I’m not very familiar with the BSD disklabels. So let’s have a look.
Multiple new BSD Bases NASes have appeared, FreeBSD intern bringing ROCm to FreeBSD, OpenSSH 10.5, and more…

I wanted to try something new and different. I’m running Linux for over 25 years now (and almost 20 years exclusively Linux on my PCs at home), my servers are on OpenBSD for almost ten years, and I had toyed with FreeBSD every now and then. And then there’s the distant past with DOS, OS/2, and Windows, of course.
Where Unix runs today, Webzfs updates, A remote filesystem for 2.11 BSD, Sylve, and more…
Gershwin is a desktop environment based on GNUstep with a not unfamiliar feel for Apple users. In this video they are installing Gershwin on a Mate GhostBSD install, and looking at a FreeBSD Live USB demo install.
Özgür Konstantin Kazanççı shares the latest improvements to jstats, his FreeBSD jail resource monitor, and introduces MariAdmin, a simple terminal menu for managing MariaDB/MySQL databases and users. He also presents openbsd-setup-ovh, a script that prepares a Debian or Ubuntu VPS to boot the OpenBSD installer through GRUB, with BIOS and UEFI support. The article includes console examples and his experience running OpenBSD on an OVHcloud VPS-4 from the 2027 range, with both IPv4 and IPv6 working successfully.
BSD Part Deux, Code that built the internet, and an interview about WebZFS
Finding a NAS that provides NVMe and SATA storage while being tiny enough to sit in my 10" rack, have a CPU that’s not hogging, use a small amount of watts and offers usage of a non-proprietary OS is not simple. Especially when you have the “must run any BSD” to the equation.
