  • On the surface, this sounded like a nice project to connect people in a real world network and exchange tools or services. Pity that the entire readme is a wall of generated word salad, apparently aimed at other bots rather than flesh and blood developers.

I’d be interested in a network like the one outlined here, developed and maintained by actual people, just not whatever this is…

By Emily Bender and Timnit Gebru, timely and thoughful as ever:

Claims of incipient, dangerous superintelligence are not based in good scientific or engineering practice. Rather, they are narratives based in ideologies of transhumanism, eugenics, and wishful thinking about imagined future digital humans.

[…]

the illusion of speed and urgency promulgated by the tech companies is also a ploy to misdirect both policymakers and the public. Unfortunately, it sometimes works, such as with Senator Bernie Sanders’s well-meaning but ultimately misguided proposed legislation to prevent the development of “artificial superintelligence.”

Describing them as “superintelligence” or “rogue models” ascribes agency to products rather than to the companies building them. This framing markets these companies’ products as “superhuman” and, at the same time, helps the companies evade accountability for their actions.

  • I for one would really appreciate just one single FLOSS community that flat out banned any and all “AI” contributed code instead of following the approach of others. Somebody have the spine to stand out, plz.

I’m not a developer, but I wanna be able to keep up with open source news without having to navigate a slippery slop(e) into clanker dominated territory.

Threads are making gestures toward federating with ActivityPub. That opens for a ton of new fedi users, but also gives Meta leverage over the policies and access to user information on independent servers.

See the linked post for arguments in favour of defederating from threads.net altogether. My question is in the title, where does Leminal Space stand on this?
