idk whether this is the right place to ask this stuff. when i see people getting banned, i often go through their mod log to check out what they got banned for. oftentimes, the bans are reasonable, i.e. if it’s a 2-day old account with 0 posts and 15 comments and all of these commends are offensive.

so i went through @[email protected] 's modlog and didn’t really see much reason why they got banned:

sure, they posted 5 combative comments, but they posted 1000 comments in total, and the last mod log entry before that was 5 months ago. i find it a bit excessive to ban an account for 73 years for that.

i’m just generally uncomfortable for people getting banned without much of a reason. lemmy already has few users (and it seems they’re getting fewer) and needlessly banning users who contribute a lot of comments surely doesn’t help there. i hope you can see my point.

i regularly browse the all feed to find new interesting content. however there’s a whole lot of small communities being advertised that are just not applicable to me. could there be a quick way to block those? i.e. without having to open the community -> “block community”, since opening the community in the first place takes maybe 5 seconds depending on how fast the network is.

ideally i’d like a quick block button next to the three-dots-menu. (maybe this button is only visible when browsing the all feed? but not when browsing the subscribed feed.) something like this:

when pressing it, it asks you something like this:

and just pressing Enter key confirms it.

so a few months ago i wrote about geo-tagging posts.

the idea is that you can add a geo-id: tag to every post that kinda represents the physical location of an event. so for example when it’s a post about some news in australia, you could add geo-id: australia to the post. then other users can filter posts by physical proximity, i.e. if you’re living in australia, it’s gonna be more relevant to you than if you live in canada.

(for practical reasons it would be cool if you would only have to add that tag once, to the community where it’s posted in, and then every post kinda gets that tag automatically.)

then there could be a custom setting in the lemmy settings that says “only display local news” that filters out everything that is more than, let’s say, 300 km from the “your own location” that you enter in the settings. This could be a client-side setting so that your physical location would never have to be revealed to the lemmy servers at all.

what do you think of this?
