I’m not using text-to-speech engines, I am bad at writing all by myself

  • Right, and yes, I read a lot on a similar device.

Pics to give you an idea: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=xteink4+review+photo&t=fpas&ia=images&iax=images I believe I set my fonts smaller than on these.

It’s just very convinient to carry it around in a pocket and take out at any moment vs conventional A5+ ereaders. I didn’t use them that much for that reason, but that thing is great in crowded busses or wherever. Strong edge2edge grip makes me overlook the amount of text it can display easily.

Where it has problems though is that it reads only epubs (text files) and preferably lighter ones too. PDFs are out of the question, manga/comic books. Not only because it’s just 480x800px - many cheaper ebooks still manage it with similar pixel count - but because of it’s serious hardware limitations.

If you sail the high seas, there is not much problem finding books of, say, Terry Prattchet or Michael Parenti in epub. But that means this device is solely dedicated to reading books, a subsection of them that someone cared to properly digitize to share or sell. Skimming through articles and documents, scrolling thtough scans, manuals, formatted textbooks is out of scope here. It does one thing, last weeks, and doesn’t feel like a huge commitment while carried around.

IMHO, as long as you can browse Lemmy threads on your phone without aids, it’s not too small, and I’d rather look at what one wants ebook for, if what you want to read fits what this reader can open.

  • Counterpoint: procedural generation in computer games existed at least since Rogue (1980) and is accepted as a well defined way to efficiently make randomized assets and asset combinations via set rules. It aces the tasks with trivial variation like said bookspines, but can go as complex as you set it up. Not everything can be supplemented by proc gen, but it’s usually the answer when you have troubles with quantity of pieces as a priority rather than quality/uniqueness of individual ones. Examples range from Borderlands guns constructor set and Diablo maps, to Minecraft-alike sandbox worlds, to overcomplicated life sims like Dwarf Fortress where multiple systems of algorhytms shape every playthrough in a different way while also reacting to player’s input.

Building such systems needs planning and thinking, but it is a potentionally endless source of intentionally designed stuff, that returns a piece on command.

GenAI though is unpredictable, unintentional and, as long as you don’t build it into the game itself, consists of fixed resources you bake in.

The niche it primarily threatens is not background props, but high effort pieces like visual novel scenes, loading screens art, character’s likeness, strings of dialogs and lore books that couldn’t be proc gened and are created piece by piece by an artist. Making LLM create bookspines is a waste of tokens, and a waste of hard drive space too to pregen them all, it only makes sense if used in place of unique assets. And, these are the things most would prefer handcrafted for they form the face of the game more than anything else.

  • ArchiCAD uses a now-usual DRM scheme of either checking a hardware thumbstick key or seeking for a background licensing server at localhost or a set IP (always-on machine with a pool of licenses one can take one from).

https://help.graphisoft.com/AC/25/INT/_AC25_Help/003_InstallGuide/003_InstallGuide-4.htm (is it the version OP got?)

A cracker should either patch the requirement off completely (or drop exe, dlls for in-place replacement) or emulate a suitable key/server that is a separate app. With a lot of software I pirated with this DRM model it’s usually the second way, emulating a server with always correct responses. If that’s the case, the primary exe file can as well be original (of some distinct version?) but the crack happens to a separate background program installed with the main app.

I think we need another look at what is actually downloaded by OP and if there is some patching process jnvolved or everything is provided already cured. Then, to see and notice what processes are running in the VM, what they try to do.
