This is going to be a fun one.

So here are the facts:

I commented on a news article about a mother and adult son charged with incest (and adultery as well for her.) This is what I said:

Someone responded to me and I replied before I realized my original comment was removed for being inappropriate. Then I added the edit when I saw.

The next day I discovered I’d been banned from that community for “pro-incest comments” and several others I don’t think I’ve ever been in for rule 4 violations. The orignal post was removed.

You can see those here:

Site rule 4 is: Usernames or posts/comments containing transphobia, homophobia, sexism, racism, ableism, zionism, anti-veganism, or trivializing COVID. No self-described or obvious fascists, conservatives, or reactionaries.

My comments had none of those things. I’d even go so far as to say my banning was reactionary.

Now, I’m not defending incest, especially not for myself. My problem is with puritanical laws interfering with the private sex lives of people. In my original comment I stated that grooming was a separate issue and should be dealt with, but that there is nothing inherently wrong with incest. That is, enthusiastic consensual sex between capable adults.

I know someone will bring up the Hapsburgs, so yes, children of incest should be avoided.

Hoffman said doctors told her her daughter would never be able to leave the hospital because of a fatal fetal diagnose.

“Which means that your baby is not compatible with life,” Hoffman said.

She said doctors gave her the option of continuing the pregnancy and providing comfort care after birth or leaving Oklahoma to terminate the pregnancy.

“The anatomy center basically told me that I had two options. I could leave the state and terminate the pregnancy, or I could carry to term where I would deliver her here, and my husband and I would just have to wait and watch her die.” Hoffman said she ultimately decided to leave the state. “So I knew immediately that that was not the option that was right for my family and my husband completely agreed with me.”

Women’s symptoms are sometimes minimized as stress, aging, or “just menopause” before they’ve been fully explored. Many are also carrying heavy loads at work and at home. Many postpone their own care until symptoms interfere with daily life.

By the time they do seek help, appointments are short, and clinicians are often working within insurance restrictions and standardized protocols that leave little room to untangle a complicated history in one visit. Many arrive having already been through this cycle before: asking for answers, being told everything is normal, and quietly getting dismissed. Add the financial burden of healthcare, with or without insurance, and it’s easy to see why so many are seeking other options that will actually help make a change for them. Women are tired of walking away with no real sense of what happens next or how to proceed, feeling more stress than they started with.

Published in 1978, Gloria Steinem imagines a world where men could menstruate.

It’s important to take this in the context with which it was written, so keep the time period in mind.

Living in India made me understand that a white minority of the world has spent centuries conning us into thinking a white skin makes people superior, even though the only thing it really does is make them more affected by ultraviolet rays and wrinkles.

Reading Freud made me just as skeptical about penis envy. The power of giving birth makes “womb envy” more logical, and an organ as external and unprotected as the penis makes men very vulnerable indeed.

But listening recently to a woman describe the unexpected arrival of her menstrual period (a red stain had spread on her dress as she argued heat- edly on the public stage) still made me cringe with embarrassment. That is, until she explained that, when finally informed in whispers of the obvious event, she said to the all-male audience, “and you should be proud to have a menstruating woman on your stage. It’s probably the first real thing that’s happened to this group in years!” Laughter. Relief. She had turned a negative into a positive. Somehow her story merged with India and Freud to make me finally understand the power of positive thinking.

Whatever a “superior” group has will be used to justify its superiority, and whatever and “inferior” group has will be used to justify its plight. Black men were given poorly paid jobs because they were said to be “stronger” than white men, while all women were relegated to poorly paid jobs because they were said to be “weaker.” As the little boy said when asked if he wanted to be a lawyer like his mother, “Oh no, that’s women’s work.” Logic has nothing to do with oppression.

So what would happen if suddenly, magically, men could menstruate and women could not?

Just happened to check the modlog right after it happened. Weirded me out to see my username at the top.

Because I so rarely downvote posts, I remembered the one: https://lemmy.today/post/59636388

I downvoted it because there was no context, just a list of names. No evidence. No nothing. It looks like harassment or trying to inspire a brigade.

I’d take it up with the mod but the strange callout list without context + OP’s extended modlog makes them someone I don’t want to DM.

In case it wasn’t obvious from my post history, no I’m not a zionist and I don’t defend zionists.

I even upvoted one of their recent posts! I’m gonna go take that vote back right now.
