Cake day: June 5th, 2025
  • Libre Office kept freezing for ten or fifteen seconds every minute or so, no matter what I was doing or not doing with it at the time. Someone in the Linux community told me it could happen and gave me a fix I couldn’t begin to understand before adding that OnlyOffice should give a smoother experience. It does. That’s all i know.

Hey, total noob here. I’ve been free of Windows and using Mint for a whooping 2 days. It’s been great. I work on text docs 7 hours a day. Libre Office didn’t mesh with Mint, and I’m using OnlyOffice. It’s perfect for my needs. BUT.

Back on Word, I had Autocorrect customized with shortcuts for phrases I use a lot. It’s a feature I absolutely need. I can’t find it in OnlyOffice. For maths, yes. For text, nothing.
There must be a plugin, a script (not sure what scripts are, tbh), something.

I’m not talking about autocomplete (I don’t want it to list words I might be typing, I want it to insert “Hello world” as soon as I type “hh” or whatever.)

Please?

  • Not sure what an appimage is, but I picked OnlyOffice in what’s called Logithèque in French, and maybe Software manager (or “repository”) in English? Main menu / Administration / Logithèque.
After an in-depth trial of at least 4 minutes, I can say I love it, and it works fine.
You now have the unending gratitude of a random French woman.

  • Yes. Well no, not yet. To be One of you, I need to say the Sentence:

Now let me tell you why your distro of choice is Not The Right One.

Here. Done. (Phew. I couldn’t list many. I’ve heard of Mint, Fedora, and Pikachu. Even then, Fedora might be a Pokemon, not sure.)

It took my old laptop dying on me for me to finally ask my geeky neighbor to install Mint on another laptop I had around.
It’s been a few hours and Omigod. Why did I waste so much time? It works. It’s easy and intuitive. It makes sense. There’s no bullshit.
I still have to make Antidote talk to Libre Office, but whatever. The rest feels good and natural.
So please whoever is here because you’re contemplating switching: do it yesterday.
