Just a dude on the internet, looking for content and fun! I love Linux, gaming, writing, reading, music, anime, walks, and occasionally movies too. Chronically ill and anxious too, that makes life quite interesting…At times. Also learning about my anthro shark leanings…Thanks furries for providing me with a safe place to explore this part of me!

  • You need to convince both Microsoft and Mojang of what you want, present your case to them about getting Minecraft on Steam. Particularly when a good case is stated to them on the matter, an audience shows up and makes it clear there is a return on investment. shrugs Replying here doesn’t really matter, unless you go to the Minecraft Forums and present your opinion, see what happens. That would be the most productive thing to do at this stage, as clearly you are convinced enough to stick with this idea.

I’m just a dude on the internet sharing his opinion that isn’t based on pure facts. Based on casual observations (I since edited my initial reply about the cash cow nature as you were right…). I feel they don’t care about Steam enough to put it on there as there have been no moves on their part to indicate any interest in years. I am no means an expert, I don’t feel like I am being particularly condescending either. It just feels more likely to get a reworked version of Bedrock Minecraft that runs on all 3 platforms like Java currently does. It would essentially achieve the same aim and would be more likely to be realized. But, eh, it doesn’t matter what I think unless I do the same. Stating my own case on the Minecraft Forums.

  • If you really think about it, Minecraft is one of their biggest cash cows (mainly microtransactions after the initial sale, especially in the case of Bedrock), they would prefer to keep all that revenue. Doing as only as little profit cuts caused by selling through other storefronts as possible. Given that Minecraft and Mojang are household names, that everyone knows about this game, and where to get it…Why put it on Steam? There is no benefit for them to do this, or they would’ve a long time ago as part of a corporate strategy. Smaller side games like Minecraft Dungeons like 1 or 2, like that’s not a big deal for them. There isn’t really reoccurring money to be made there for them aside from a one time sale. Feels like a profit by volume of sales situation to me.

Person on the web, it is not as hard for them to make modifications to the existing code which can already run on Linux with modifications, C++ games can easily run on Linux with modifications. It doesn’t take a complete code re-write to do this.

You can literally have several codebases with minor changes made for each platform. They clearly have done this for Java, they know there is a fan base on Linux for this game. There is an incentive for them to make the adjustments if enough people speak up. Like, I dunno why you are so stuck on this pipe dream for Minecraft on Steam as if it is the only way forward. But, you can hold on to it if you wish, dearie.

  • Yeah, I mean the only problem with the Steam Deck is that Steam OS (which is based on Arch) doesn’t allow for package layering, otherwise you’d be able to use the official launcher which is on the AUR. I have no idea why they still haven’t promoted that one to the extra repo yet. Given that Minecraft has been out for donkeys years now…There is clearly no incentive for them to launch it on Steam. They are big enough that they are fine without Steam for Minecraft.

  • There is a merit to not causing economic collapse, but, honestly being smarter about marketing would’ve solved the issues they are facing. Instead of the stupid thing they are currently doing. Solidifying the absolute distrust and disdain in a product that was overpromised, overhyped…By very irresponsible people, who fucked so much trust, broke a lot of systems. Just to create what amounts to trash (a surveillance capitalism economy).

I think we have always been a bit fucked, given the recent rash of breaches and countless consumer data leaks…It’s all coming apart gradually because all of these companies have faced ZERO accountability.
