OpenAI was always expected the first big player to go. It doesn’t mean that the bubble will pop. If the interested parties can prop it up or even cannibalize it then they might keep going for couple of months to a year.

It wont be like dead dead, but just stagnant. Companies like nvidia will just sell the barely passable hardware with even less reason to upgrade because the prices will rise and the performance jumps will decrease. The good thing is that even the entry level hardware was already good enough for 95% of use cases and what justified upgrades anyway was mostly AAA gaming graphics slop or heavy 3d renders for professionals.

What if you need or want something custom that doesn’t come from an assetpack or store? Humanity also had solutions for digging holes before excavators came around. “Right tool for the job” is a concept.

You can build a GUI around that and many desktop environments do just that. All desktops use a config files or registries deep down, not all of them have an options menu. You drop a lifelong windows user in i3 and they will burnout within minutes trying to move a window and will quit thinking that they are stupid.

Any WM that relies on keyboard shortcuts as the default has no future on mass market. Also when most people use tiling features in other deskops the most common split for productivity is 1/2 + 1/2 or maybe 1/2 + 1/4+1/4. Pure tiling VMs are overkill in most cases and more splits you have the smaller they get. Something like Niri might be the sweet spot, since for it 50/50 splitting is the default and doesn’t go too heavy on the keybinds and with good shell can somewhat work even without them.

Google has been just good enough for it not to start a mass exodus to alternatives. Even if those alternatives are just google/bing front-ends themselves with no real indexing of their own.

Gen-AI use is fine if it’s used within good taste and for generating bulk background props and somesuch. It doesn’t make a gamedev any holier or respectable if they torture themselves by hand drawing 1000 unique titles and textures for bookspines for some NPCs bookshelf.
