Cake day: November 30th, 2025
  • The 2025 and later versions of the Kia and Hyundai EVs use heat pump technology, as do some or all Subaru EVs. At least they do in Canada. I’d be unsurprised if more did. I bought an old Leaf, which has a number of limitations, but does well as a second car or a city car. If I can convince my wife to replace her SUV with an electric, heat pumps will be part of the reason why.

  • Win2k was the NT line, which was generally more stable than the main Windows line, but couldn’t play games well and didn’t have any real consumer penetration. WinNT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, 4, then Win2k (the first server version to not use standard version numbers), then WinXP, which was the version that merged the home and workstation/server lines, but also continued the home version tradition of sucking badly every other version. Vista, 8, and now 11 fall into that list.

I did use 2k back in the day and while it wasn’t as good as XP, it was a serviceable work platform. Don’t ask me about any issues on the server side, I did very little with that.

  • Win98 was trash, which is why Win98SE was a free upgrade. Now you may have meant SE, but those are distinctly different versions, which is required to follow the rule of every other OS release being trash. SE was followed by ME (trash, recommended daily reboot), followed by XP (good, merging of the NT and old windows line, still able to play most games with the compatibility layer, 3 GB Memory addressing, etc.).

  • My current employer will not authorize the use of a password manager. I have a key fob for my Microsoft account, and another account does phone verification. I use one password. If they don’t want to put the effort in for account security then neither do I. I use a password manager for nearly all my other accounts.

  • From what I gather, valetudo sits between the firmware and the cloud, co-opting cloud functionality and serving that from the vacuum. Since nothing is going to the cloud, only the information stored on the robot, or that you’ve stored yourself, can be used against you. So while your vacuum may have a microphone or camera, it shouldn’t be recording what you say or do anywhere. I have yet to start my valetudo journey and have barely started my robot vacuum journey precisely because of scenarios like this.
