I want to be insanely excited for this but am wondering how friendly whatever launcher they use will be on Linux.
- dgdft@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Good reason for optimism: they have official Linux clients for both main games, and Dragonwilds is/was well-supported on Proton.
- boonhet@sopuli.xyzEnglish2 days
Do they have an official Linux client for RS3 again? Last I checked, they only had a really ancient package for Ubuntu where you’d have to mess around with the dependencies - or you could use Proton, or an unofficial flatpak. I’m not even on a Debian based distro so I play via Proton when I do

Great question: I thought there was one, but it’s probably what you’re describing. I haven’t touched RS3 in almost decade, so I’m ootl on details.
That said, Bolt definitely supports RS3, and there’s been enough lip-service towards Linux client work from Jagex that I’d be outright stunned if they didn’t at least tacitly support Linux for RS4.

Good news they currently have a Linux launcher in beta for OSRS and eventually itll expand to rs3 and dragon wilds, so rs4 will likely use that too!
- Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish2 days
Thats awesome, I stopped playing a while back because they forced account creation on windows platform to verify account before being allowed to use runelite.

In the age of reboots/remakes, why the fuck not. People are paying to see movies they’ve seen over and over again. Why not reboot video games. I mean… It’s cheaper to feed people the slop they’ve already eaten than it is to create new, and we all know how we love helping developers/corporations/parent companies all that money!
I say bring it on.
- Skipcast@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
I’m unreasonably giddy for this. I really hope the game turns out good and that they don’t remake the same mistakes they made for rs3 that they’re finally fixing

I’m so excited. I have a maxed (group) iron on osrs so you know I love the fuck out of runescape. Anyone w/ any questions hit me up, I’m not a jmod but I watched the whole conference this was announced in for example.

2 daysIs the RS3 remastered edition supposed to be a separate MMO or just like different worlds where everyone starts fresh at level 3?
- 2 days
The remastering is just visual upgrades and stuff along those lines.
There’s also “reignited” which is sorta a new account type like a hardcore or an ironman, in that it plays on the same worlds as normal accounts, but with some light restrictions like no mtx and a separate game economy.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
2 daysYeah, reignited was the word I meant! My bad, thanks for answering though.
That makes sense, I stopped playing around level 60 but honestly it might be fun to play through again without all those crazy bonus experience features.
Although their xp-per-level algorithm is kinda crazy, it’s like running into a cliff when you get to mid-range. Grinding can still be fun at level 40, but at 70+ it’s just painful. I hope they balance that better in RS4
- 1 day
92 is half of 99 :D
roughly every 7 levels the exp doubles, which is pretty crazy. I know rs3 has skills that go beyond 99 too which is somewhat daunting for my osrs brain.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
1 dayYeah the highest I got in any skill was like 75 fletching because I needed rune arrows and the skill balance/alignment really breaks down between archery and fletching in those later tiers.
By the time I got to 70 and had five more levels to go, it was a slog. Once I got to 75 I was like “never again, I’m not doing this for every skill, and I’m not aiming for level 80 in anything either.” The reward kinda diminishes at that point on ftp too, like “do I really need to make yew incense sticks? Pretty sure willow sells for more…” There’s just no reason to go past 60-75 in most skills
Probably the only other skill I got to 70+ was mining, because I did so much of it while leveling smithing, and the balance/alignment breaks down between those skills too. Mining stardust also helped.

Is this going to be just a visual upgrade? What are some of the biggest changes to be excited about?
- the_shwa@programming.devEnglish2 days
I think rs4 is a bit of a misnomer, its not part of any of their current games but an additional standalone game. From their website:
“RS4 is not a replacement for any of our games, be it Old School, RuneScape or Dragonwilds. Those games have their own dedicated teams, exciting roadmaps and continued investment. We’ll be designing RS4 to sit alongside them as an additional way to experience RuneScape and the world of Gielinor.”
- 2 days
Yes runescape game naming is kinda weird.
Theres “runescape classic” aka rs1
then they did a big graphical overhaul and went from 2d to 3d that’s runescape 2
then runescape 3 coinciding roughly with evolution of combat and a big rework to ui, graphics, and music (much to community hatred)
then osrs which is runescape 2, but a “what if we didnt do some of those unpopular changes and made you all vote on what content enters the game”
there are lore differences between osrs and rs3, arguably you can call these two games completely different timelines at this point.
Osrs is currently the most popular version of the mmo, and this probably won’t change for awhile.
Off to the side we have dragonwilds, a survival crafting game set in the runescape 3 universe, but on a different continent that is unkown in runescape 3 or osrs.
runescape 4, unlike runescape 2 or runescape 3 is supposed to be its own version based more on dragonwilds than an upgrade from the previous version (rs3 in this case)
- 2 days
Its light on specifics since its a few years out, but its a complete new start/game built off old lore.
A new game built in unreal (same as dragon wilds), set furthest in the runescape timeline, sometime after dragonwilds, and in the same place as dragonwilds.
they talked on stage how people wished dragon wilds was an mmo, so the general assumption is… dragonwilds but strip out survival crafting and make it more classic mmo-y. I won’t be surprised if they reuse assets from dragonwilds to speed up development significantly.
As the other poster said they plan to develop it concurrently with rs3, osrs, and dragonwilds.
I would imagine if you find dragonwilds combat, world, lore, or just anything about it to be enjoyable, this mmo might be something to look forward to.
