From what I understand (very limited knowledge here, might be BS) YouTube actually pays creators more than pretty much any other platform.

Nah, that’s any YouTube use. Unless you actively refuse to engage with right wing content, it will be pushed at you.
If you don’t engage, they’ll try to get you to bite with occasional right wing crap.

Essentially, yeah. I only experienced it once a while back while travelling in eastern Europe. There was free filtered wifi everywhere. Some of the locals said they had the same thing, but from phone plugs in their walls.
I guess the closest thing I can compare it to would be TV back in the day? You got the dozen or so free channels if you had an antenna, and then you paid for cable if you wanted the good stuff.

Some places you get internet, but you’re limited to 3-4 “basic” sites unless you pay for it. Facebook/Whatsapp is often one of those basic sites. Or was.

Now which of those is available worldwide?
There are parts of the world where you can get online and on Facebook/whatsapp without even having “internet”. If you pay for Internet, you get access to other websites as well.

Now do whatsapp, the default messaging platform for the majority of the world.
People are already anthropomorphizing AI. That’s a good chunk of the problem. If you get used to being shitty to an AI that takes it, then you’re a lot more likely to be shitty when you go touch grass.
This is also the best argument I ever heard against AI friend/relationship apps. It’s teaching you a certain style of communication which may well prove catastrophic in real life relationships.
