Cake day: July 15th, 2025

I’ve fallen in love with this series over the last couple weeks. I really enjoy long running series, and while the 80’s humor can have some moments that age very poorly, there are also many things to love.

Also I’m reading scanlations from a few different sources, and I love seeing the old TL notes and credits pages.

I still have about 700 more chapters to go so I hope it holds up!

This game is a spiritual succesor to the cult hit “Fat Princess”

I spent hours playing FP local multiplayer with my cousin and have been dying for something like it for over a decade. I’ve been following the development of this one for awhile now and the dev is super passionate and the game seems like it’ll be great.

I went and saw Faust at a local theatre and was struck by Mephisto’s design

That’s a vampire! That is the classic old school cinema vampire. Long black cloak, slinking around the room, and the classic hair style. I was sure I was seeing the addition of the Widow’s Peak to the vampire repertorie, even if Mephisto is not one himself.

But upon looking into it I found the claim that the style comes from the famous Bela Lugosi, and his actual hairstyle.

Article with the claim

But that article gives a year for the first appearance of Bela on stage as Dracula, 1927. Faust was released in 1926!

I have found one article making the same connection, so I’m not the first one to see this link

Janning’s cape and widow’s peak seem an obvious inspiration for Lugosi’s Dracula. This is also hinted at in his appearance over the village as a giant bat.

But Faust was not a commercial success, is it really believable that the Broadway version of Dracula was pulling so much inspiration from a German movie released just a year earlier?

I’d love to know if anyone can correct me on any of this, or has any information to resolve the mystery.

Also go watch Faust if you haven’t, its a fantastic movie.

At least where I am.

First morning since summer I had to look for a blanket in the morning. I’ve got thick socks and a sweater on and I can officially say it feels like fall.

I’m excited to get out my pumpkins and hoodies but I’m not excited for those frozen mornings in bed.

Also not looking forward to having to scrape my car windows off in the morning :^( Maybe I’ll try making that home recipe spray deicer this year.

I know most mobile games are ass but every now and then something good pops up.

I had a blast with this game when it first dropped, and it just had a big update

If you like incremental games I highly recommend this one. Dev seems really cool as well

Also I’m 100% unaffiliated with the game, I just came across while scrolling the top 100 paid list on the playstore.

I learned this morning that

The first mass-produced cotton swab was developed in 1923 by Polish-American Jew Leo Gerstenzang after he watched his wife attach wads of cotton to toothpicks to clean their infant’s ears.[1][2] His product was originally named “Baby Gays” in recognition of their being intended for infants Wikipedia

Here is the ABC article that info is sourced from

I can see why they changed it.

I just wrote up a post explaining the idea behind the community here

https://lemmy.zip/post/71296154

But to give a shorter version, Post Today is meant to be a reliable, low effort place to share and discuss almost anything you want, and to see how many days in a row you can go without breaking your streak.

Early reddit had r/reddit as a catch all place to post and I think it did a lot to grow the site. While I know various c/random, c/justpost, and c/interestingshare communities exist and are great, I think I am offering something a bit different here.

My hope is that it’ll catch a bit of the 196 vibe, but be more varied, and that it will lead to an interesting community.

Or it’ll just be me posting and it’ll be like a little personal blog I can look back through. I’ve had communities go both ways ahah.

If you’ve read this far please go there and make a post right now!

When I use my phone in my free time I do a mix of things. I browse Lemmy for a bit, check my subscriptions, upvote and comment here and there, and then I close my Lemmy app.

Then I go to my favorite blogs, I read manga, I scroll tumblr, I listen to podcasts and watch youtube videos, and I discover new and interesting things.

Sometimes I find myself thinking “Hey I should share this cool thing with Lemmy!” But I run into some issues. It might be hard to find a good community for it, or they might have restrictive rules.

I once submitted a post to a music community that hadn’t had any activity in months. The mod messaged me within an hour of posting to let me know he’d taken it down because I’d broken a rule by not putting the year after the song title instead of before.

So this community is meant to do three things.

  1. Spark the thought, “What have I found outside Lemmy recently that might be fun to share?” Or “What have I created recently that might be fun to post?”

  2. Give people a place to post whatever they want without worrying too much about it.

  3. Get people into the habit of posting. Its fun to build up a streak!

I highly encourage people to crosspost! (And follow that comms rules when you do!!) Want to share a cool manga you found? Post it to c/manga and post it here too! Lots of sleepy communities only get a post every other month. If this comm can spread the activity out then that is great imo.

I’ve been active on Lemmy for years, even though I’ve switched accounts due to issues with other instances and privacy reasons. I’ve built a few different active communities and I enjoy doing it. I’m hopeful that this can be an interesting little corner of the Fediverse. Its a work in progress, and you might see the rules change as I figure out what works and what doesn’t. If you have any questions or feedback comment or send me a PM (also I know this breaks the one post a day rule but its a pinned post! Thats a fair exception! Dont ask me to ban myself!)
