Cake day: July 5th, 2026
  • Nah, nothing will be learned.

From the inside, just the way people continue to drive despite the daily gnarly wrecks I drive past, nothing will change no matter how fucked it is here.

The Republicans will continue to blame everyone but themselves, and Democrats will continue to whine how nobody plays fair and it’d be better if they were in charge even though whenever they are they just shrug and say “its just so complicated when you’re in charge, nothing we can do.”

Trump will steal the midterms if he even lets them proceed. Martial law will be called over something so blatantly transparently bullshit that the rest of the world will wonder why we aren’t doing a France/Spain right now.

And maybe we will, but our country is so geographically huge that sending in the military as “peacekeepers” may as well be an actual foreign occupation force. And don’t kid yourself that rural/red states will feel even a fraction of the up-front pain that will be inflicted upon blue states and every major city out of pure malicious spite. At least, not up front. The economic pains will echo shortly after, but they will continue to say its all the Democrats’ fault.

I still see big Trump stickers where I drive. I see mostly Republican signs wherever I go. Republicans are merely arguing over who sits in the chair while Democrats have been all but legally locked out without a wild quasi-national shift in political demographics. Which modern rhetoric precludes because tribalism>logic and reason.

The country will deteriorate and people will just whine about it and continue about their business as though it isn’t an actual existential threat.

I would love to be wrong, but I unfortunately live here.

  • One part of the problem here is the volume of cases and the workers actually available to investigate.

My daughter had a spate of incidents where she ran into doorknobs being at just the right height for it. It kept happening in the same spot. And then one day she was throwing a tantrum behind a closed door and when I opened the door, of course that same spot on her head got a good thump from the knob. We immediately took her to the hospital because we were worried about her head.

Over a year later we got a visit from CPS regarding the hospital visit and the injury. Wife and I were distraught at the thought of such an investigation because of the implications. The workers assured us it was actually routine, just on the slower side of things given how busy they are. That was honestly even more disturbing than being investigated, learning that it takes that long to follow up on a suspicion.
