I first watched this movie with my GF of the time a couple years later. She was absolutely stricken. I was numb and overwhelmed. I reached over to comfort her, and she shrimped away (an MMA technique, haha), which made me feel like… yesterday’s refuse. But later, I got it. You give people the space they need, period.
For me it was an early-ish lesson upon the titration of distance. A valuable lesson in general I’d say, but each person has their own set of boundaries IME, and to me, part of the process when you care about someone is in learning their boundaries, and respecting them at face value. Better yet, that more-probably applies to everyone outside of ourselves, yeah?
HOWEVER-- if someone’s a hard smoker, drinker, over-eater or drug-user, then sure, that could seem a hard boundary at first, but is also a signal that something is very off.
(note to self: how did I possibly get on to all that? 😅)
Foof. Evidently this was a tribute (amongst many) to André Franquin, possibly by Uderzo as a tribute to his passing.
