I’ve been following this story for decades, and I’ve come to the conclusion that this is an actual TRADITION among the Catholic clergy.
For centuries, they’ve been molesting the young altar boys and choir boys, and a few decided to stay and become priests themselves, and then did it to the next generation. Over the centuries, the church recognized that this intergenerational molestation accounted for a significant percentage of priests, who joined because they’ve become pedophiles, after being molested themselves.
How can they give up a recruitment channel that’s responsible for 15-20% of their ranks? What are they going to use to replace that channel? Chastity is an even less desirable attraction today than it used to be.
They’ve always known about this, and quietly tolerated/approved it, because ultimately it was good for the church.
I think goes further. I also believe self hating gays and pedophiles are also drawn towards the clergy as well. Makes it even more attractive if you know the church will protect you as well.
Maybe. It seems that for most of them, that decision to become a priest is made fairly early in life. I don’t know how many people have strengthened their sexual identities that much by that early age. I’m sure it’s true for some though.
